SCHOLARSHIPS

Our "Pay in Words" Scholarship Policy

We are committed to ensuring that OpEd Project workshops are affordable for all who are dedicated to changing the world with their voices, especially those who are most underrepresented in our society. To that end, we provide full and partial scholarships for up to 30% of participants in any public workshop. Our scholarship policy follows a "sustainable social justice model" in which each workshop is designed to run at cost (neither profit nor loss) while allowing as many scholarships as possible. Thus, the number of scholarships we can offer depends on the number of participants who have registered at the time.

We value a diverse and inclusive culture and work to ensure that our rooms reflect these values. We encourage scholarship applications from all qualified individuals and welcome all races, colors, religions, genders, sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, ages, national origins, marital statuses, citizenship, abilities, veteran status and records of arrest or conviction. We want to ensure that anyone who wants to change the world can join us. We also want to ensure that everyone has skin in the game. That is why we ask for an advance payment—whether in dollars or in words. Everyone is contributing, one way or another. This leads to a great experience, and great results. For everyone.

HOW TO APPLY

We ask anyone who wishes to receive a scholarship to "pay in words" by submitting an application telling us why the assistance is needed, what op-ed you are committed to writing, and how it will contribute to changing the world. We go on the honor system, but we ask that you request the minimum scholarship support that will allow you to attend—so that we can accommodate others. We provide partial and full “pay in word” scholarships based on need. Please submit your request as far in advance as possible, and ideally at least six weeks before the date of the desired program. You can find the application HERE.

*Note: You must submit your scholarship request to us before you register. We cannot retroactively grant scholarships.

Once you have been awarded a scholarship, please be sure to do the following:

  • Accept the scholarship offer within 7 days of receiving it. We receive many requests and want to ensure that scholarship seats are filled. If we do not hear from you, we will make an offer to the next person on the wait list.

  • Attend the workshop to which you have applied. If you’re unable to attend the workshop for any reason, you can pay a transfer fee, or can reapply for another workshop in the future.

  • Opt in to the Mentor-Editor program within one month of completing the workshop, to receive individual feedback on your op-ed. This will statistically double your odds of success getting published.
